So far my book is all black and white/off white, navy, and red. These colours are sort of like, communist, 50's and 60's colours and fit with my theme I think. The thing is that I am beginning to feel really limited by this colour scheme and like I can't include a lot of the imagery I want to include. I know maybe I just need to work with it, but I was wondering what everyone thought about adding a bit of other colour maybe in a specific section.
So my question is, if I included a chunk of pages with colour imagery (similar subdued colours to the imagery below) would this look cohesive at all with the rest of my book or would it just not match?

The communist color scheme is working for the look and the feel you're trying to achieve. The top photo here I think goes well in terms of adding color but this photo is sepia/black&white so there isnt too much color. The second photo to me doesnt quite match with the rest of the book. But then, you do want to have little books within the book so maybe a separate colored photo book can be incorporated. Mite be a fresh surprise!
ReplyDeleteTry tints of the communist colors...navy blue, reds, greens even...Sepia works quite well and I really like the collaged look of the top photo here.
I agree with Andy. The top photo would work well with the book, but the bottom one would be out of place. The content of the photos also would seem out of place, everything else is so mechanical - unless you want to add contrast to that with these photos, maybe a book within your book would be a good idea. I love the communist color scheme and feel of your book - keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI'll start by saying that I love your spreads! I think your current colour scheme is really working for you. It really speaks the Constructivism period to me, which has its ties in communism.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the colour scheme is limiting you. So far, it looks like you've had it work in your favour, even with the simple use of an orange circle.
I agree with both Andy and Samia. A book within a book can work, or even just having these pages printed on glossy to differentiate between these images from your regular content, which can be on matte. I've seen this done in other books and they've worked quite well!
Hi Sara,
ReplyDeleteWhile I love what you've done so far with this colour scheme, I totally understand the restriction you're probably feeling. I think Jessica's idea of varying the page finish might help differentiate between sections or large/small books. Perhaps even just incorporating different splash colours in some of the surrounding graphic elements rather that the images might help strike that balance you're looking for (ie. how you have the red circle overlaying one of your photos...)
Another idea I really enjoyed of yours, is the post you made with the multi-sized book. I think if you're trying to divide your book into sections or even just differentiate some spreads from the rest, this could be a really great way to communicate that with the reader. It would also just make the book more of an art piece than "reading material" which, from my understanding, is more what you're going for...
Anyway, nice work, looks great!
