This question is the one I am the most concerned about which I keep asking anybody who will look at my book!
I am wondering whether when you look at all of the spreads and the bit of text so far (there will certainly be more text) you are getting a general theme or whether it all seems too confusing. If it is confusing I really want to know because I think there are ways I can have it make more sense, I just haven't done them because it seems like the theme and the text/imagery combination makes sense to me but that could totally just be because I have been staring at it for so long.

I know what you mean by it cud just be you staring at it for so long! Im in the same boat!
ReplyDeleteI liked the page layouts but couldnt tell exactly what they're about except that they all seemed to be about some kind of 'order'. Then I read your concept and everything fell into place, I can definately make out that its about control and every page so far is representing control in a completely different way from the previous page so that keeps the interest going.
However, you did mention that you're trying to make this into something like an art project/illustrated book? Maybe then, you dont have to worry so much about whether its confusing ppl. I cud understand from just reading the concept and you seem to have text at various pages so that shud help more with the understanding. Maybe the readers can connect the dots themselves...Its about control rite? maybe you can consider how much are you controlling the reader as well...
Oh, that is a really good thing to think about, that last part. Thank you for that comment!
ReplyDeleteIt is confusing when you look at it, but it's not supposed to just make sense right away like a story right? I like that aspect of it, that it's a collection, you can obviously tell that it's a book with a specific theme carried throughout. So you shouldn't worry about having a solid text narrative.
ReplyDeleteI think if you have any knowledge of Foucault or related theories then it is pretty clear. Also your chapter openings on 'the gaze' and 'the institution', etc. provide a good basis as well for what you are about to see. I really love the colour and style of your spreads they are great!
ReplyDeleteAnd that is a good point from Andaleeb you probably don't want to control the reader by making everything so clear cut. What I really like about the spreads is their mysterious quality and what I can infer myself from the images.
I think it works. The idea of control is a very abstract concept and the imagery really communicated the idea. If the reader actually reads the information in the book, they are bound to understand the whole concept. Your book is not only a picture book, it's also about ideologies of control in different forms.
